The basis of the RIE approach is respect for each individual child as a unique human being. Through respectful interactions, teachers form strong bonds with each child that create a sense of security. This sense of security is deepened through individualized caregiving routines and the relationships developed over the two years spent with a primary caregiver.

The environment for our youngest children is critical to their growth and development. We strive for an environment that supports the natural gross motor development of each individual child, without equipment that constrains children’s movement such as high chairs or swings. Uninterrupted time for engagement with open-ended materials is also an important element of the approach that leads to confident babies.

The beauty of the RIE Approach is that it teaches us to slow down and truly reflect the experiences of each child back to them in ways that grow their self-esteem and sense of self.
